Rising to the Challenge

To ensure global warming remains below 2°C, the world must remove between 3.5 and 5.4 gigatons of carbon dioxide each year by 2030. This means the deployment of carbon removal technologies on a scale never seen before. Biochar is primed for large-scale deployment in the UK to meet this imperative.

Harvesting Carbon

Biochar is a carbon-rich product produced by stabilising the carbon captured in biomass, typically wood, which has been removed from the air by plants. Through tailored biochar solutions, Black Bull Biochar facilitates seamless integration with existing farm management systems, empowering UK farmers to bolster crop yields while minimising on-farm emissions.

The Biochar Network

BBB is scaling carbon removal in the UK bybringing together British industry and agriculture. Through our integratedsystem, our partners use biochar to restore our environment, remove carbon and enrich industrial and agricultural systems.

Harnessing Photosynthesis

Plants spend their lifetime absorbing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, keeping the planet in balance. At the end of their life - through either decomposition or burning - this carbon is returned back to the atmosphere.

Breaking the Carbon Cycle

When trees are harvested to produce timber, multiple product streams are created. Low-value co-products, such as sawdust and woodchip are typically decomposed or burned at the end of their life. These co-products are diverted to become biochar feedstock.

Pyrolysis to the Rescue

Biochar is produced by heating biomass in a low-oxygen environment, a process known as pyrolysis. This securely locks the carbon in biomass, preventing it from returning to the atmosphere for thousands of years. The pyrolysis process generates renewable heat which can be utilised in industry.

Biochar increasing Yields from Grassland on Dairy Farms

Black Bull Biochar set up field trials in collaboration with UKCEH, SRUC and Arla, trialling the use of biochar in dairy manure management systems. We achieved a 16% increase in silage yield with a low-dose application of biochar, at just 200 kg per acre.
